Winter Watercolor Classes

As I'm writing this blog,  looking out my window is a winter wonderland.  Fresh snow, fresh world, fresh inspiration!  Winter watercolor classes are about to begin and we'll try to capture some of the magic of snow on our sheets of white watercolor paper.  It's a new year and I'm looking forward to new experiences in teaching and painting.  As I teach, I learn - so painting snow....here I come!

Still Life Commission

I just finished this commissioned painting for friends that will hang in their dining room.   They have lovely accents of red and green in their decor so the challenge was to create something they could live with and enjoy for years to come.  The fall hydrangeas are from their garden, with touches of green from Indiana Osage oranges (or hedge apples) and purple asters.  I chose pomegranates for the touch of red because they are in the market now and compliment the green.  Apples would have worked as well, but pommegrantes are a fun fruit to paint and just a bit out of the ordinary.

It is painted on a full sheet of  Bockingford watercolor paper with a limited palette of  American Journey paints from Cheap Joe's.

Christmastime Paintings

Christmas is in the air and it's great to reflect it in painting.  I just finished a four hour workshop with several students painting poinsettias.  Every Christmas I paint poinsettias using different techniques, but always with a live poinsettia in front of me.  The students enjoyed trying out the technique on a small painting before launching into a larger one.  This painting is still in progress.

Normally I don't paint conceptual paintings, but I was asked to create a Christmas Concert inspired by the music our church choir is singing.  It was a fun challenge to pay attention to the lyrics and see a thread running through them that could be reflected in a painting.

This fall I've enjoyed being a part of a wonderful women's contemplative Bible study at church.  This painting is another conceptual painting experience  trying to capture the essence of the study - listening with open heart to the Scriptures and each other.

Inward Journey - Outward Journey Exhibit Now Open!

The exhibit at the West Lafayette Public Library is officially open for the month of November.  Forty one paintings trace my journeys over recent years - both the inner and outer journey to France, Israel, with Nature and the Seasons and the Wabash Valley.  I hope the public enjoys the exhibit as much as I enjoyed creating it.  A big thanks to my husband, Steve, and my sister and brother in law , Sue and Brian Henderson for helping to hang the paintings.

Solo Exhibit in November

These days I'm getting ready for a solo exhibit at the West Lafayette Public Library.  It's a good reason to get all of my work re-organized, matted and framed to hang.  Thinking over the paintings I was going to hang, a theme came together for me:  The Inward Journey - The Outward Journey.

The Inward Journey - the Outward Journey
is the theme of a solo watercolor exhibit featuring the art of Jerie Artz, at the West Lafayette Public Library the month of November.  The exhibit is a retrospective of the artist's work reflecting her journeys to France, Israel, Southern Illinois and recently the Lafayette area.  Deeply influenced by nature and the changing seasons, the artist strives to express a "joie de vivre" as she "dips her paintbrush into her soul and paints her own nature into her paintings," a favorite quote by Henry Ward Beecher.
The public is invited to attend an opening reception, Sunday afternoon, November 3rd from 3:00 - 4:30 at the West Lafayette Public Library, 208 W Columbia St, West Lafayette, IN 47906

Trio - quick paint pears

Just finished a quick paint of pears.  The neighbors behind us thought they bought an ornamental pear tree for their front yard - but this year it is loaded with pears - probably Bartlett.  The pear butter is cooking in the crock pot, a little pear pie for Steve is nearly devoured, but this trio I just had to capture in watercolor instead of throwing them in the pot!
Trio
Okay - just playing around - had to add Susan Bostwick's sculptured pears to the mix, just for fun! this is one of those times where Thomas Merton's quote is so apropos! "Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time..." it's fun getting lost in pears!
