Flamingos are just so exciting to paint! They exude attitude with all of their poses that as an artist makes them appealing. It began at the paint out at the Indianapolis Zoo and a month later I still have the burning desire to keep on painting them.
My first painting at the zoo emerged with a minimal background to let “The Gronk” in all his pompous glory to shine. In my studio I have experimented with backgrounds to show them in their natural habitat at the zoo, but have gone back to simplicity, with nothing competing to detract from their uniqueness.
As I look at the paintings with backgrounds, I think of an artist who said”the best painting was 15 minutes ago.” Overpainting, knowing when to stop, that is the tension in watercolors.
So for now, I am embracing simplicity!
